10/4-House of the Devil (2009)

Based on that poster or any stills you may have seen of this movie, you might think that it was made in the 80s.  Well, it wasn't.  It was filmed in 2009.  But that feel is intentional!  First of all, the movie takes place in the 80s and was shot on 16mm film, giving it that old, grainy feel.  Even the title sequence is a homage to the genre movies of the time.

The film opens with the following title card:

Samantha Hughes is a college sophomore getting her first apartment, but being a student has next to no money.  After answering an ad for a babysitting job, she goes to the house only to learn that there is no child to watch after, but rather an elderly is to be care for.  Sam is understandably uncomfortable with the subterfuge, but agrees to stay for a greatly increased wage.

Meanwhile, her friend (who dropped Sam off) stops to light a cigarette on her way home, which really kicks the suspense into overdrive with a big "what the fuck" moment.

I don't have ton to say about this movie that doesn't involve going scene by scene and I don't feel like doing that.  It's a slow burn, but with creepiness throughout.  Each scene builds upon the suspense of the last leading up to a nice payoff.  This movie is another example of a reasonably believable "true story."

If you want something that will make your skin crawl without too many jump scares, this is a good movie for you.

Rating on the Spook-o-meter: 5 out of 10 boos
